Journeys of perception

I am the Kanbak, the Tumbleweed, who moves through time and space driven by the winds of life. One may speak of postcoloniality, of a Central Asian society made up of tumbleweed individuals who have broken away or been torn from their roots, traveling downwind in search of a new home. But the history of civilization tells us that population migrations have occurred throughout the world even before the latest wave of colonizations. And after them, in our later times, before the pandemic, people were not restricted in moving around the world, migrating and emigrating. Although the pandemic has temporarily slowed down these flows of travelers, on the other hand it has sharpened the desire of some to change their place of permanent residence dramatically, while others may have realized that there is really nowhere to go.

I, just like any other person, have a prism of perception, which is always with me. Of course I am not always aware of it; but usually, if I am going somewhere on a trip, I take a portable kaleidoscope with me to capture the reality of my movements through the prism.

Fatima Omir

Fatima Omir is a Kazakhstani artist with a classical education in painting. Her versatile artistic expression ranges from classically impressionist oil landscapes and portraits to performance art, video and sophisticated art involving live animals. Critical topics include connectivity, human relationships and human–animal relations, but also deconstruction of common myths of capitalism and of political heroes. A giant tumbleweed with an inbuilt kaleidoscope could become one of her iconic works, symbolizing the constant search for new artistic landscapes and new eyes to look at the reality around her.
